What jobs can a locksmith book ahead?
Most locksmith work is planned rather than urgent: rekeying after a move or a tenant change, replacing locks worn out by weather or a break-in, cutting and programming car keys and fobs, installing smart locks, opening and servicing safes, and keying buildings for staff or tenants. We repair and install garage doors as well.
At home
Two questions settle most house jobs: who still has a key, and is the hardware still good? When the locks are sound and the worry is old keys, a rekey retires every one of them while your locks stay on the door. When salt air, damp or a forced entry has worn a lock out, a lock change puts in new deadbolts that actually reach the strike. Want codes instead of keys? See smart locks. For the full picture of what we do in a house, flat or condo, the residential locksmith page is the place to begin.
Moving in soon? The new home page lists what to sort out on possession day.
Vehicles
Lost your only car key, or tired of sharing one between two drivers? We cut and program car keys at the vehicle for most makes. Key fobs, push-to-start remotes and remote starter fobs have their own page, because they fail for different reasons than a cut key does.
Garage doors
Springs, cables, openers, rollers and tracks, panels, locks and full replacement doors, for houses and commercial buildings. Coastal wind and salt are hard on the moving parts, so garage door repair is where to start when something sounds or feels wrong.
Offices, shops and rental buildings
Storefronts, offices and staff changes are covered on the commercial locksmith page. Bigger setups have their own pages: access control for card and fob entry, and master key systems for buildings where many people need different doors. Landlords and property managers can open an account through the landlords page.
Safes
Forgotten combination, dead keypad or a lost safe key? Go to safe opening and service.
-
Access control
Swap keys for cards, fobs, codes or phones and you choose exactly who gets through which door, and at what hours. When a credential goes missing you simply delete it instead of rekeying. Every job begins with a walk-through of your site.
-
Car keys
Down to no keys, or only one? We come to where the vehicle is parked, cut a new key and program it to the car for most makes, so you skip the tow and the dealer wait.
-
Commercial
Shops, offices, clinics, warehouses and multi-unit buildings across HRM call us for the same few things: a key that left with a former employee, an exit device that has stopped latching, or a door count that has outgrown loose keys. We handle all of it, plus the overhead door at the back.
-
Garage doors
Springs, openers, cables, rollers, tracks, panels and locks: we repair and replace all of it, on home and business garage doors across Halifax, day or night. If a car is trapped behind a door that won't budge, call or text now.
-
Key fobs
A fob that has gone quiet usually needs one of three things: a battery, a repair, or pairing again with the car. We find out which, then fix, reprogram or replace it, and we add spare fobs and push-to-start keys for most makes.
-
Lock change
Some locks are past saving: corroded by salt air, worn smooth, or bent in a break-in. We take the old hardware out, fit a new lock or deadbolt, and check that the bolt seats fully in the strike before we call it done.
-
Master key systems
With a master key system, everyone carries a single key that opens their own doors and nothing else, while managers carry a key that opens more. We design the levels with you, pin the locks to match, and keep track of which key went to whom.
-
Rekeying
A rekey leaves your locks on the door and changes the key that opens them. We replace the pins in each cylinder, so every old copy is useless and a single new key works on the doors you pick.
-
Residential
We rekey, replace and upgrade the locks on homes across Halifax and Dartmouth, from peninsula flats to new builds in Bedford, and we fix the garage door too. Below is how to tell which job your door needs, with a link to the full page for each.
-
Safes
Combination forgotten, keypad dark, key nowhere to be found, or a safe left behind in the house you just bought? We open home and business safes with non-destructive methods first, then reset the combination or service the lock so it doesn't happen again.
-
Smart locks
We fit keypad and smart deadbolts, set them up with you on the visit, and make sure the bolt still seats cleanly when a wooden door swells in the damp. A physical key stays with you as backup.
Questions people ask
- Should I use this page if I can't get in right now?
- No. Head to the locked-out pages, or call or text us. Emergency calls are answered day and night.
- Will I know the price before the work begins?
- Yes. We give you the price first, and if the job turns out bigger once we open it up, we stop and check with you before carrying on.
- Can one visit cover a few jobs?
- Often it can. A house rekey, a spare car key and a garage door opener adjustment can share a visit. List everything when you book so the right parts and key blanks come with us.
- Do you come to Dartmouth, Bedford and the outer communities?
- Yes. We work across Halifax Regional Municipality, on both sides of the harbour. The areas page lists the communities we cover and explains how travel works.
