Why does my garage door go back up before it closes?
The usual cause is the safety sensors either side of the door near the floor. A film of salt, damp or grime on the lenses, a knock that throws one out of line, or something in the beam makes the opener think the way is blocked. Wipe both lenses, line them up until both lights are steady and try again. If it still reverses, the force or travel settings or the door itself need a technician.
Check the door before blaming the opener
On a healthy door, the springs do the lifting and the opener simply moves a balanced load. So when an opener labours, the cause is often the door: a snapped spring, a frayed cable, rusted rollers dragging in the track, or a bottom seal frozen to the floor. With the door fully closed, pull the release and lift it by hand. If it is heavy or uneven, the opener is not your problem.
Faults we see on openers
- Goes down, comes back up: dirty or misaligned safety sensors, or force and travel limits that have drifted.
- Hums, nothing moves: trolley disengaged, stripped drive gear, broken belt or chain.
- Remote or keypad does nothing: batteries first, then reprogramming, then replacement.
- Dead after a storm: tripped breaker, a trolley left disengaged, or a logic board hit by a surge.
- Slow and noisy: worn drive parts, or a door that has grown heavy because the springs are tired.
Damp, salt and the safety sensors
The two little sensors at the bottom of the door frame sit right where salty slush, puddles and blowing snow collect. Fog and wet weather leave a film on the lenses, and a careless shovel or a bin knocks them out of line. When the door keeps reversing, wipe both lenses with a soft cloth, clear anything from the beam and check that both indicator lights are steady before you call.
When the power goes
Storms take the power out, and an opener without power is just a rail on the ceiling. Learn where your release cord is and how to use the manual release safely, and only pull it with the door closed. When power returns, reconnect the trolley as your opener's manual describes before you press the button. If you lose power often, ask us about an opener with battery backup and a surge protector on its outlet.
New openers, set up properly
When an opener is worn out, we install a new one, set its force and travel to your door, test the safety reverse with the sensors blocked, and pair every remote and keypad you want. Ask about battery backup and phone control when you book. If the door itself is due for replacement, see garage door installation.

Questions people ask
- The motor runs but the door stays put. What's wrong?
- Either the trolley is disengaged from the door, often after someone used the manual release during an outage, or something between the motor and the door has failed: a stripped gear, a snapped belt or a broken chain. A broken spring also leaves the opener unable to lift. Don't keep running it.
- The opener died after a power outage. Is it finished?
- Not necessarily. First check the outlet, the breaker and that the trolley is reconnected. A surge when power comes back can damage the logic board, which is often a repairable part. We test it and tell you whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
- Can you program a new remote or keypad?
- Yes, for most opener brands. Have all your remotes on hand so we can pair them in one visit and clear any that were lost.
- Repair the old opener or replace it?
- If parts are available and the motor is sound, repair. If it is old, loud, short of parts or missing modern safety features, a new one is usually the better use of your money. We tell you which before starting.
- Can I get an opener that works when the power is out?
- Many current openers offer a battery backup that runs the door for a number of cycles during an outage, which is worth considering where storms knock the power out. Ask when you book and we'll go through the options for your door.
