Car key replacement in Halifax and HRM
Down to no keys, or only one? We come to where the vehicle is parked, cut a new key and program it to the car for most makes, so you skip the tow and the dealer wait.

Can I get a new car key if I have lost every key?
Yes, for most makes. A mobile locksmith can produce a new key from the vehicle itself, cutting the blade to the lock or key code and programming the chip to the immobilizer, with no original needed. Expect to show photo ID and proof that you own the vehicle.
Two parts to every modern key
Most car keys from recent decades carry a transponder chip. The metal blade opens the door and turns the ignition; the chip proves to the car that the key belongs. A working replacement needs both: a blade cut to your locks and a chip programmed to the immobilizer. We do both on site, whether the car is in a driveway in Clayton Park, a parkade downtown or a lot off the highway.
When every key is gone
Losing the last key feels like the end of the road, but for most makes it is a routine job. We work from the vehicle, so the original is not needed. Read can a locksmith make a car key without the original for the step by step and the documents to have on hand.
Salt, slush and worn keys
Road salt and slush get into door locks, and freeze-thaw nights can leave a cylinder stiff or iced. A key that has been forced through a sticky lock all winter wears down, bends or cracks at the head. If your key now needs jiggling, have a fresh one cut before it fails in a parking lot on a wet February evening. If the door lock is the problem, our guide to a frozen car lock covers what to try first.
One key is a risk
Owning a single key means one lost pocket stands between you and a stranded car. A spare made now, while you still have a working key, is the simplest insurance a driver can buy. Book it on your schedule rather than in a hurry.
Smart keys and lockouts
Remotes, proximity keys, push-to-start fobs and factory remote starter fobs have their own page: key fob programming. Got the key but can't reach it? That's a car lockout.
Booking a car key

Questions people ask
- What should I have ready?
- Photo ID, the vehicle registration or another proof of ownership, and the VIN if you can find it. The VIN is printed at the base of the windshield on the driver's side and on your registration.
- Is the original key needed?
- Not for most makes. Our guide on making a car key without the original explains what happens on the day.
- My key turns badly in the door. Should I replace it?
- A worn or bent key strains the lock and ignition. A freshly cut key often fixes it. If the lock itself is corroded or stiff, tell us and we will look at that too.
- Do you handle newer vehicles?
- Many of them. Send the year, make and model or the VIN and we confirm what your key needs before anyone heads out.
- I have my key, but it's locked inside the car.
- That's a lockout, not a key replacement. Go to the car lockout page or call us now.
