What does a residential locksmith do?
A residential locksmith looks after the locks on a home. That means rekeying so old keys stop working, replacing locks that are worn, corroded or damaged, fitting stronger deadbolts, installing keypad and smart locks, and letting people back in after a lockout. Garage door locks and home safes are often part of the same work.
Start with the door, not the catalogue
Before anyone sells you a lock, it helps to know what is actually wrong. Is it a key problem (too many copies out there), a hardware problem (a cylinder that grinds or a bolt that drags), or a door problem (a frame that has moved)? Each has a different fix, and the cheapest fix that solves it is the one we suggest.
Same locks, new key
When the hardware is in good shape and the only question is who else can get in, a rekey is the answer. We change the pins inside each cylinder and hand you new keys. Every copy cut for the old pins stops working on the spot.
New hardware when weather or force has won
Locks on the coast age faster than people expect. Salt carried on the wind, fog and road spray work into cylinders and corrode the small parts inside. Add a forced entry or a cheap builder-grade deadbolt and the right job is a lock change: new hardware, fitted so the bolt throws all the way into the strike.
Codes instead of keys
A smart lock suits households with kids coming home from school, a dog walker, or a short-term rental guest list. Exterior keypads here deal with damp, salt air and freezing rain, so we go over batteries, a backup key and placement before fitting one.
Peninsula homes, flats and new subdivisions
Housing across HRM asks for different things. On the Halifax peninsula and in older parts of Dartmouth we see wooden doors, original mortise locks and houses split into flats with a shared front entrance. In newer streets in Bedford, Clayton Park and Fall River, the common job is a possession-day rekey, since nobody can say how many builder and trade keys went out during construction. Condo owners usually need the suite door and storage locker on one key.
The garage counts too
The side door into the garage is often the weakest entry on the property and the one people forget to rekey. Its deadbolt is ordinary lock work. The overhead door, its lock and its hardware are covered under garage door repair.

Questions people ask
- How do I know whether to rekey or replace?
- If the lock turns smoothly and only the keys are the concern, rekey it. If it sticks, is corroded, was damaged in a break-in or is too light for the door, replace it. We look at each lock and tell you which before any work starts.
- Do you work on older wooden homes?
- Yes. Older houses often have original mortise hardware, strikes painted over many times and wooden doors that swell in damp weather. We check the door and frame along with the lock, because a deadbolt that cannot reach its strike is not doing its job.
- Can you help with storm doors and sliding patio doors?
- Those use their own latches and handle sets. Send a photo, plus the make if you can see it, and we confirm what we can do before booking the visit.
- I can't get into my house right now.
- That is the emergency side. Go to the house lockout page, or call or text us now.
