Smart lock and keypad deadbolt installation in Halifax
We fit keypad and smart deadbolts, set them up with you on the visit, and make sure the bolt still seats cleanly when a wooden door swells in the damp. A physical key stays with you as backup.

Do smart locks hold up to Halifax weather?
They can, if they are chosen and fitted with the coast in mind. Exterior keypads face salt air, fog and freezing rain, batteries run down faster in cold weather, and a door that swells in the damp can bind the bolt until the motor stalls. Pick a model with a key backup, replace batteries before winter, and have the strike set so the bolt moves freely.
Why people switch to codes
Keys get lost, copied and lent out. Codes can be handed out and taken back. Give the cleaner a code for Tuesdays only. Let a contractor in from your phone while you are at work. If you host a short-term rental, set a fresh code for each guest instead of hoping the last one returned the key. Teenagers home from school don't need to carry anything.
Fitted for coastal weather
Most smart lock trouble we see is about the door and the weather, not the electronics. A keypad mounted on an exposed front door takes salt spray, fog and the freezing rain that glazes everything after a winter storm. Wooden doors swell through wet spells and shrink when it turns dry, and a bolt that runs even a little tight in the strike makes the motor work hard until it gives up. We fit the lock, test the throw with the door shut, and adjust the strike before we go.
A few habits keep a smart lock reliable through the year:
- swap the batteries in the fall rather than waiting for the first warning;
- keep the backup key somewhere you can reach without opening that door, such as a car or a trusted neighbour;
- after freezing rain, let ice melt off the keypad or clear it gently instead of pressing hard on frozen buttons.
Storms and power cuts
Nor'easters and ice storms knock power out across the region from time to time. Battery-powered locks keep working through that because they never depended on house power. The part that can drop is the Wi-Fi connection the app uses. If remote access matters to you, we talk through how your chosen model behaves when the internet is down.
Picking a model
There are three broad types: keypad only, keypad with app control, and fully app-driven locks. The more connected the lock, the more convenient it is, and the more there is to charge, pair and update. We share what we see working on doors around HRM, then fit whichever one you choose.
Replacing a lock anyway?
If the current lock is worn or damaged, the smart lock goes in as part of a lock change. If other doors are staying on keys, we can rekey them during the same visit.

Questions people ask
- Do smart locks work during a power outage?
- A battery-powered smart lock doesn't use house power, so the keypad and key keep working when the lights go out in a storm. What you can lose is remote control through the app if your home internet goes down with the power.
- What if the batteries die?
- Most models give low-battery warnings well ahead of time, and most include a key cylinder. We recommend a model with a key override for that reason.
- Which brands do you install?
- Most common brands of keypad and smart deadbolt. Tell us the model when you book, or ask us for options and we explain the differences.
- Will you install a lock I bought myself?
- Yes. We confirm it suits your door before fitting, because door thickness and bore size vary from house to house.
- Can I manage the codes after you leave?
- Yes. We set the lock up together on the visit, so you know how to add, change and remove codes and app users yourself.
