Key fob and smart key programming in Halifax, NS

A fob that has gone quiet usually needs one of three things: a battery, a repair, or pairing again with the car. We find out which, then fix, reprogram or replace it, and we add spare fobs and push-to-start keys for most makes.

What makes a car key fob stop working?

Most often a weak battery, followed by a worn button, a damaged circuit board or a fob that has dropped its pairing with the vehicle. Damp and moisture can also corrode the contacts inside. If a fresh battery doesn't bring it back, the fob needs a repair, reprogramming or a replacement.

Finding the fault

Your fob locks and unlocks the doors, tells the immobilizer the car may start and, on many vehicles, runs the remote start. When it stops doing one of those, start with a new battery. If it's still dead, or only reacts when you are pressed against the door, the problem is the button, the board or the pairing. We test the fob, tell you which, and fix what can be fixed.

Proximity and push-to-start keys

With a push-button ignition there is no blade to fall back on for starting. If the fob is lost or dead, the car stays put. We program replacement and spare proximity keys at the vehicle for most makes, so the car does not need to be towed anywhere.

Damp air, wet pockets, salty slush

Fobs in Halifax live a damp life. Fog and drizzle, a soaking walk across the parking lot, a drop into slush at the curb: moisture finds its way past the seams and corrodes the battery contacts and buttons. A fob that grows unreliable after a wet winter often has a corrosion problem rather than a pairing one. Batteries also lose strength on a cold morning, so a fob that needed two presses in November can quit on a frosty January day. Our guide to a key fob not working in the cold covers the hidden blade and quick checks.

Remote starters

Plenty of drivers here warm the car up on icy mornings, and that is exactly when fobs get locked inside a running vehicle. If that has just happened, go straight to keys locked in a running car. For factory remote starters we can pair a new or extra fob. Aftermarket systems differ by brand, so name yours when you contact us.

Getting it booked

Text the year, make and model with a photo of the fob. We tell you what it needs and the price before we come out, and nothing starts until you agree, as our price promise explains. Need a full key with a cut blade? See car key replacement. We cover the communities on our areas page.

Questions people ask

Is it worth trying a new battery myself?
Yes, always try that first. It costs little and often solves it. If the fob still won't respond, or only works right beside the car, it's time to call us.
The fob is dead and I'm standing at a locked car. What do I do?
Look for a small release on the fob. Most hide a metal blade that opens the driver's door. Our guide on fobs that fail in the cold shows where it usually sits.
My fob got wet. Can it be saved?
Sometimes. Take the battery out, let it dry fully, then try a new battery. If it still misbehaves, corrosion may have reached the board and we can test, repair or replace it.
Can you program a spare or a remote start fob?
Spares, yes for most makes. Factory remote start that lives in the vehicle's own fob, yes for most makes. For an aftermarket starter, tell us the brand when you get in touch.
Do you program push-to-start keys?
Yes, for most makes. Send the year, make and model and we confirm before driving out.
