Garage door installation in Halifax, NS
A new garage door starts with a measure visit. We check the opening, the framing and how you use the garage, help you pick a door that stands up to salt air, coastal wind and freeze-thaw winters, then take out the old door and install the new one.

Should I repair my garage door or replace it?
Repair it if the problem is a spring, cable, roller, hinge or the opener. Replace it when several panels are dented, cracked or rotten, when rust has eaten into the bottom section, when the door is so old that parts are hard to find, or when you now heat the garage and the door has no insulation.
When a new door makes sense
Most garage doors don't need replacing; they need a spring, a cable, rollers or an opener. A new door is the right call when the door itself is worn out: wooden sections that have soaked up years of rain and fog and gone soft, steel panels rusting from the bottom up, dents across several sections, or an old uninsulated door on a garage you have turned into a workshop. We tell you plainly which side of that line your door is on.
The measure visit
We measure the opening and check the headroom, side room and backroom, look at the framing and the condition of the jambs, and inspect the existing tracks and opener. Older detached garages in established neighbourhoods often have tight headroom or framing that has moved over the years, and that shapes which doors will fit. You get the scope and the price before anything is ordered.
Choosing a door for the coast
- Wind: exposed lots, wide doors and doors facing open water benefit from reinforcing struts and solid track mounting.
- Salt and damp: look for galvanized hardware and a durable finish, and plan on rinsing the door now and then if you are close to the water.
- Freeze-thaw: a good bottom seal, a level slab and tight side and top weatherstripping keep wet snow out and stop the door freezing to the floor.
- Insulation: worth it for attached, heated or workshop garages; less so for a cold detached one.
- Windows and style: match the house, but each window gives up a little insulation.
- Opener: sized to the door, with battery backup worth a thought where storms cut the power. See garage door openers.
Install day
We remove the old door and its hardware, mount the new tracks, hang the sections, fit springs matched to the door's weight, and connect the existing opener or a new one. Then we balance the door and test it: it should hold still halfway up and reverse when the safety beam is blocked. Before we leave, we show you the manual release and the simple upkeep that keeps salt and ice from shortening the door's life.

Questions people ask
- Do I need an insulated door?
- If the garage is attached, heated, used as a workshop or has a room above it, insulation makes a clear difference to comfort and drafts through a damp Nova Scotia winter. For an unheated detached garage it matters less. We talk it through on the measure visit.
- My house is exposed to the wind. Does that change the door?
- It can. Wind pushes on the whole face of a garage door, and wide doors on open or waterfront lots feel it most. Reinforcing struts and sturdier track and hardware help a door hold its shape. We look at where the door faces and how exposed it is before recommending one.
- What holds up best in salt air?
- Galvanized steel hardware, a well-sealed factory finish and a good bottom seal all help, and so does keeping the door clean and the moving parts lubricated. We point out the options that suit a home near the water.
- Can you reuse my existing opener?
- Sometimes, if it suits the weight of the new door and is in good condition. We check it on the measure visit and tell you.
- How long does an install take?
- It depends on the door, the opening and what needs to change around it. You get a realistic timeline at the measure visit rather than a guess over the phone.
